Salahi denies being White House party-crasher
By EILEEN SULLIVAN
WASHINGTON – The couple that got into the White House state dinner for the visiting Indian prime minister without invitations denied Tuesday that they were gatecrashers.
Appearing on a nationally broadcast morning news show with his wife, Tareq Salahi said the furor surrounding his and his wife Michaele's attendance at the dinner a week ago has been a "most devastating" experience. White House spokesman Robert Gibbs described President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama as angered by the incident.
Salahi told NBC's "Today" show Tuesday there's more to their side of the story — an explanation that would exonerate them from allegations of misconduct. Gibbs insisted the Salahis had not been invited...
****Without exculpating the Salahis, who are likely publicity-hounds (for personal and financial reasons), it is likely that there was some "inside" collaboration, from either Federal staff or from some legitimately-invited guest.
Michaele Salahi spent SEVEN HOURS getting ready for the event and it strains credulity that anyone would expend that effort without some probability higher than nil of getting into the event.
Tareq Salahi is of Palestinian extraction and seems to be an acquaintance of Rashid Khalidi, a Palestinian anti-Israel zealot who was/is a close friend of Barack Obama before moving from Chicago to Columbia University. It would be interesting to learn if a) Khalidi had been invited and b) if Khalidi had attended.
Pending further information, it seems likely that there was, at least, collusion on the part of some legitimate attendee who either vouched for the Salahis ( not that that would exonerate the Secret Service ) or otherwise cooperated in them getting admitted. Evidently they attended an affair of the Black Congressional Caucus on the grounds that they were invited by their own law firm, who probably purchased a table at the event but where the security was doubtless less than one protected by the Secret Service. ****
