Ron Kessler's book about Secret Service reveals facts about Presidents.

Jimmy Carter liked to give the impression that he was a "regular guy" who carried his own luggage BUT the luggage was either empty or he would make his Secret Service agents carry it when he got out of camera shot. (This was NOT in the usual functioning of Secret Service agents.) He also would come to the working part of the White House and tell his aides to inform the press that he was hard at work at 5 a.m. whereupon he would go to sleep on the couch.
Lyndon Johnson's behavior out of camera sight was extraordinarily bizarre. His security detail said of LBJ that "had he not been President, he would have been in a mental institution."
